Prayer and Obedience

Scripture: John 15:10
If you obey my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have obeyed my Father’s commands and remain in his love.

Obedience is a high virtue which Jesus Christ requires of Christians. In this text Jesus sets an example for us: He obeyed all God’s commands.

Obedience is doing God’s will: it is keeping His commandments. Jesus says in John 14:21, “Whoever has my commands and obeys them, he is the one who loves me.” Obedience is the outward proof of our inward love for God. We prove our love for God by obeying His commands.

There are 613 commandments in the Law of Moses. And Jesus added more in the Sermon on the Mount. Can we keep all of God’s commandments? Does God give commandments which we cannot obey?

Do earthly parents require of their children commandments which they cannot obey? The answer is NO! Likewise, God doesn’t require of us commandments which we cannot obey!

Jesus said in Matthew 7:9-11, “Which of you, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!”

Can we keep all of God’s commandments? The answer is YES! But it has o be by the power of the Holy Spirit!  We can receive the Divine ability that enables us to obey every one of them.

Jesus said in John 14:15-16, “If you love me, you will obey what I command. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever.”

Apostle Paul said in Philippians 4:13, “I can do everything through him who gives me strength.” And he exhorted us in verse 6, “Do not anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.”

We can obtain ability to obey all of God’s commandments through prayer!

Holy Spirit,
Come upon me!
Strengthen me!
Enable me!
To carry out Your pleasing wills.

I am weak but You are strong!
I cannot but you are able!

In Jesus’ name. Amen.
